Urban housing shortage

24.7 million housing units is the estimated urban housing shortage in 2007, as calculated by the technical group constituted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. Shortage of housing units is projected to increase to 26.5 mn units by 2012.

  1. That still looks like a pretty big number, even for India. I thought the government already had a hand at stabilizing the real estate sector there.

  2. It's a disturbing number all around. It's still pretty hard to believe that a lot of people still can't afford a house, much less other creature comforts like chairs or beds.

  3. I guess these numbers are also reflective of other factors aside from the properties themselves. Like the fact they can't even afford their own beds or something.
